Facebook: it’s the greatest social network platform on-line, offering its over 2 billion users the chance to get connected to people around the planet.
But what will happen should the liberating power of technology begins clashing with all the special interests of corporations and countries?
In a damning new report by?The Intercept, journalist Glenn Greenwald explains Facebook’s shocking censorship spree within the direction on the Israeli government—systematically shutting down countless pro-Palestine accounts/content because…well: Israel says so.

Tensions between Tel Aviv and Palestinians is certainly not new, however, when the influence of social media to sway public opinion started becoming too powerful, considered one of Israel’s most notoriously “authoritarian” officials, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, called for a gathering with Facebook representatives to do something about it.
“The predictable upshot of those meetings now are clear and well-documented.
“Ever since, Facebook is on the censorship rampage against Palestinian activists who protest the decades-long, illegal Israeli occupation, all directed and based on Israeli officials.
“Indeed, Israeli officials are already?publicly boasting?about how obedient Facebook takes place when you are looking at Israeli censorship orders.”
A whopping 95% famous Israel’s requests for content removal were?granted by Facebook, asserted Justice Shaked.

The Big apple Times?succinctly put it, “Israeli security agencies monitor Facebook and send the company posts they consider incitement. Facebook has responded by removing many of them.”
The nefarious nature on the censorship only becomes clearer whenever you know that 96% of Palestinians operate the social websites site primarily to check out news.
Indeed, one pro-Palestine organization, the Palestine Information Center, saw not less than 10 of these administrators’ accounts suspended—a variety of them permanently banned.
Back in March, another page to your “Fatah” political party had also been terminated (though eventually restored) because “of old photo posted of former leader Yasser Arafat holding a rifle.”
“Certainly,” notes The Intercept’s?Glenn Greenwald, “Israelis have virtually free rein to write what you want about Palestinians. Calls by Israelis for your?killing of Palestinians are commonplace?on Facebook, and largely remain undisturbed”:
As?Al Jazeera reports:
Inflammatory speech posted inside Hebrew language has attracted a lesser amount of attention from the Israeli authorities and Facebook…[according to study] 122,000 users directly requested violence with words like murder, kill, or burn. Arabs were no. 1 recipients of hateful comments.
It’s a sobering illustration showing how power colludes to silence any opposition, and Facebook simply seems caught in the crosshairs, trying to please everyone.
And now, it’s not merely Israel. Also the United states of america government have carte blanche authority to just make Facebook’s hand in deleting content it doesn’t like.
Last week, the provider deleted the account of barbaric dictator Ramzan Kadyrvov—although not on account of anything offensive he did or posted, but for the reason that US government reported to.
A spokesperson for Facebook told? The Nyc Times that this account was deleted because Mr. Kadyrov had “just been included to a us sanctions list and the the business was legally obligated to behave.”
In short, government authority—whether it is Israeli or American—appears to have massive sway over thats a private company can and cannot allow on their platform.
